How to Save Money on Health Insurance

What are your options?

Here are your options

  1. Change plans within the same insurance company — You may be able to reduce your premiums by increasing your deductible, co-pays, and/or out-of-pocket maximums.
  2. Change insurance companies — Sometimes it is possible to save money by changing companies, though doing so requires you to be flexible with how you use healthcare (i.e. this kind of change may require you to change doctors, hospitals, pharmacies, etc.).
  3. If you are eligible for tax credits and/or other subsidies, make sure these benefits are correct — we consistently find situations, where incomes reported to Connect for Health Colorado, have been over-reported, under-reported, or are otherwise just plain wrong. Please make sure to review your income estimates so that you don’t miss out on tax credits or subsidies that you are eligible for.
  4. If you are eligible to do so, you may want to consider enrolling in your employer’s group health insurance plan — The group health insurance market has been much more stable in recent years than in the individual health market. In fact, for 2019, small group health plans were less expensive than comparable individual policies. Even if rates were the same, you would still be better off hopping onto a group plan and using pre-tax dollars to pay premiums (saving you at least 10-20%). If your employer doesn’t currently offer group health insurance, forward this message to them and/or contact us for more information.
  5. If you are an employer, now is the time to consider offering a group health plan — Doing so can save BOTH you and your employees on premiums and give you both tax benefits/savings too! If you are interested in exploring the group health insurance options click here.
  6. If you are Medicare-eligible or soon to be, contact us to review your Medicare supplement options. Medicare does not cover everything. In fact, there are significant gaps in coverage that are frequently overlooked. Medicare supplement policies and/or Medicare Advantage plans can cover these gaps for little, and in some cases, no extra cost.
